Perennial Plant Association’s Perennial of the Year 2022

Drumroll please….

The Perennial Plant Association has announced that the 2022 Perennial of the Year is: Schizachyrium scoparium, also known as Little Bluestem or beardgrass.

The Perennial of the Year is a prestigious award, as the perennial chosen must be able to grow in a wide range of climates, require low maintenance, have multiple-season interest, and be relatively pest and disease free.

Schizachyrium scoparium ticks all the boxes and more! In regards to climate, it is a very hardy plant. In the Pacific Northwest however, it is important to ensure your soil is well-drained and dry. Once established, Little Bluestem is tolerant to drought and heat. In the summer the grass is a shade of blue/grey with fluffy silver flowers when in bloom. In the fall, the grass turns to a lovely shade of red-orange and purple.

Another advantage of Schizachyrium scoparium is that it is very resistant to pests and disease. Little Bluegrass is deer-resistant as well!

The two recommended cultivars for the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain region include: Schizachyrium scoparium ‘The 2 Blues’ and Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Standing Ovation’. Please note: if you are looking for Schizachyrium scoparium or one of these specific varieties, we cannot guarantee that we will carry it in stock at our locations. Please call to confirm beforehand!

What’s so great about ornamental grass?

Grass may be the last plant on your spring gardening checklist, however these beauties are far from boring and should not be forgotten! Ornamental grasses create diversity by adding texture, depth and colour to your garden.  They also have ecosystem benefits to promote life and vitality in your garden. Grasses act as shelter and protection for insects and other small creatures. They are also a versatile perennial plant which can grow well in a number of locations such as slopes and dry, slightly rocky areas. Grasses can also be used as ground cover, border plants and container plants.

What sets Schizachyrium scoparium apart from the rest is its beautiful year-round colour! Little Bluegrass also can reach up to 12 feet tall in favourable locations.
