GROW YOUR OWN
Vegetables
Homegrown vegetables offer unbeatable flavour and freshness — and they’re easier to grow than you might think. From leafy greens to vine crops, there’s a vegetable for every garden space, whether you’re working with a full backyard bed or a few containers on a sunny balcony. Our West Coast climate supports both cool- and warm-season veggies, with options for planting nearly year-round.

Best Vegetables to Grow in Your Garden
The best vegetables are those picked fresh right from the vine! Hunters Garden Centre has fresh veggies ready to be planted in your garden, available at both Vancouver and Surrey stores. Many herbs and vegetables grow great together too.

Cucumbers
Plant in a warm sunny location. Grow up a stake to save space, prevent mildew, and encourage the fruit to grow straight.

Peppers
Mild or hot - we've got them for you! Peppers like full sun and lots of fertilizer - these heavy growers make a fresh addition to salads and dishes.

Kale
Kale can handle full sun to part shade. Grown for its leaves, kale can be cut and continue to grow throughout the season.

Lettuce
Plant new plants every few weeks to stage the harvest. Protect from slugs with copper tape or slug bait.

Carrots
A cool-season essential, carrots grow best in loose, well-drained soil and thrive in spring and fall across the Lower Mainland.

Beans
Plant beans in full sun for best results throughout the season!

Spinach
Spinach are fast-growing vegetables, so they don't need as much sun or fertilizer. Enjoy an abundance of fresh greens with our spinach plants.

Zucchini
Zucchini plants are heavy feeders, similar to peppers and tomatoes, therefore they need nutrient-rich soils and lots of sun and fertilizer!
Pumpkins & Squash
Don’t forget about these staples! Warm-season crops that love to sprawl, pumpkins and squash are perfect for large garden spaces and rewarding fall harvests in Vancouver’s summer climate.

Pumpkin
Best planted after the last frost, pumpkins need room to spread and are ideal for cooking or seasonal décor

Squash
Includes both summer and winter varieties, offering long-lasting harvests and vigorous growth through BC’s warmest months.
