When to Bring Your Tropical Plants Indoors for Winter

One of the biggest questions gardeners ask each fall is… when do I bring tropical plants indoors?

The short answer: wait until nighttime temperatures dip to around 10°C. There’s no exact date, but in the Lower Mainland, anytime after September 15th is a safe bet as the weather cools. Use your best judgment and watch the forecast to avoid sudden cold snaps!

How to Transition Your Plants Indoors For Winter

Once you’re ready to make the move, follow these steps to help your plants adjust smoothly.

1. Inspect for Pests

Check leaves, stems, and soil for pests like aphids, spider mites, or whiteflies. Treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil before moving them indoors to avoid spreading pests to your houseplants.

2. Clean Your Plants

Wipe down leaves with a damp cloth or give them a gentle rinse to remove dust and debris. Clean pots as well to prevent hidden pests or soil problems from coming inside.

3. Acclimate Slowly

Bring plants indoors for a few hours each day before making the full move. Once inside, place them near a bright window and consider using grow lights if natural light is limited.

4. Adjust Watering

Indoor air is drier and plants grow more slowly in winter, so water less often. Let soil dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.

5. Maintain Humidity & Temperature

Most plants prefer 18°C–24°C with some humidity. Keep them away from drafty windows, heaters, or vents. A humidity tray or humidifier can help tropicals adjust.

6. Keep Watching for Pests

Continue to monitor your plants after the move. Indoor conditions can still encourage pests, so act quickly if you spot signs of trouble.
